Set-up Bearings

In all cases the carrier bearings are a pressed fit. In setting up Dana axles it is necessary to remove and replace the bearings to adjust the backlash. This requires a bearing puller and press each time to change the shims. With use of specially prepared bearings. I can change shims before you can set up a puller. This special set of bearings can be developed in just about any shop. The I.D. has to be honed oversize so it is no longer a press fit. A hone is easy to make. For an arbor, use a small hole saw or round handle screwdriver, Wrap with a layer of sponge rubber that can be compressed. Anchor a strip of emery cloth with tape and draw it tight to compress the sponge rubber. Grip the bearing in a vice and spin the hone within the bore with a drill motor to enlarge the I.D. so it is a slip-fit on the bearing journal. Thus making a shim change possible without a puller. After the final adjustments are made, press on the standard bearings.
