| With proper attention a very accurate toe-in adjustment on front straight axle assemblies can be made by this method. Raise the front end so the tires clear the floor. Mark a fine line with a scribe in the tread surface at the 9 o-clock position on both tires. Hold 1" mark of the tape measure on one of the scribed lines and measure across the front to the line on the opposite side. Keep the tape measure parallel to the floor. Record this dimension. Rotate both wheels so the marks are in the 3 o-clock position and measure in the same fashion as the front. The distance in the front should be 3/16" - 1/4" less than the rear measurement. If not, loosen the clamps on the tie rod and adjust. Note. Instead of scribing a line on the tire we have found that by using a staple also works well. Especially if you do the measurements by yourself. Use a standard office stapler and put the staples in the same position as the scribed lines. Leave one staple out just enough to hook the tape measure on and proceed with your measurements. |
